ISLAMABAD: Prior to the test series Younis Khan was under pressure to perform in the two test match series against Australia as he was left out from the one day squad, but as the series is in process he showed such marvelous performances with the bat that the Chief Selector is under pressure that either he would maintain the post or not for the sin of excluding Younis from limited over matches. Before the first test match Younis Khan had scored test hundreds against all the test playing nations excluding Australia, but he showed his class and elegance with the bat by hitting three tons, including a double hundred in three consecutive innings. He not only became the highest century makers for Pakistan by surpassing Inzamam with 27 test hundred under his belt, but also broke 90 years old record by scoring three hundred in a test series against Australia and became second batsman to hit two tons in same test match back to back against Aussies after 1974. He became third Pakistani batsman to surpass 8000 tests runs in 93 matches with better average than Inzimam and Javed Miandad.
Putting a glance at the test matches average of Younis, one would find him in the list of the greats of the game. He is the fourth batsman in the history of test cricket to maintain average above 50 in all the four innings, to be exact he maintains the record of 1st Innings – 2180 runs at 51.90 2nd Innings – 2642 runs at 56.21 3rd Innings – 1990 runs at 51.02 4th Innings – 1118 runs at 53.23. On average he scores a hundred after every three tests, which is much better than some of the greats of the game like Sachin Tendulkar, Jacque Kallis, Ricky Ponting, Biran Lara and many more. Amongst all the greats of recent cricket history only Sachin Tendulkar is closer to him with an average of scoring a hundred after 3.89 test matches.
One of Pakistan’s modern batting greats; Younis Khan is the kind of man who responds best in adversity, he remains the last hope in tough batting conditions. He has a triple-hundred and a famous double-hundred against India in India under his belt. He played the anchor role to clinch Pakistan’s 3-0 test whitewash over England in UAE couple of years before, leave no doubt about his quality and class. He has great fielding and catching skills, at the age of 36 he is still one of the fittest fielder in the team. He has shown that he possesses great skills of leaderships as he lead Pakistan to the world Twenty20 title in 2009. Administration of Pakistan Cricket Board must realize that Younis is the pride of Pakistan and must handle him with care and respect, ever smiling legend deserves it.
